Governor’s visit
New governor of Sverdlovsk Region Alexander Misharin continues to get acquainted with the region’s economic network. Last week he visited such industrial towns as Kachkanar, Lesnoi and Serov.
Kachkanar is one of the region’s mining and ore processing centers. Citizens of all three towns expressed similar worries concerning rising costs of electricity and gas, hot water and heating, and the coming celebration of the 65th anniversary of the victory in the World War II.
The governor also visited Nizhnyaya Tura, where two children died of viral infection in the orphanage.
Children died
Two children died due to acute viral infection in the Children’s Home of Nizhnyaya Tura, Sverdlovsk region. Another nine children were urgently hospitalized. 33 kids got infected in total.
The orphanage of Nizhnyaya Tura gives home to 147 children aged 6 to 15 with heavy affections of central nervous system. All children who fell sick were lying patients. Investigators are now looking into the details of the case and interviewing staff members of the orphanage.
Tatyana Merzlyakova, children’s rights commissioner in Sverdlovsk Region, also paid a visit to Nizhnyaya Tura in regard to the lethal cases.
Exceeding the target
Titanium Corporation VSMPO-Avisma outstripped its business plan in January 2010. The corporation produced 136.8 percent of titanium products for the Russian and CIS market and 110.6 percent of titanium products for export operations.
General director of VSMPO-Avisma Mikhail Voevodin spoke quite enthusiastically on the first meeting of the board of directors: “I want to compliment production workers, because business depends on the start of work in January so much. And we had a powerful start, both in production volume and in the amount of orders placed. There are tendencies to expect positive dynamics in February. Good orders continue to arrive, so we face the future optimistically”.
Election campaign
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, came to Ekaterinburg to meet with the party’s voters before elections. He also delivered a lecture entitled “Problems and Ways of Humanization of the World Economy”. The political leader also roughly criticized those state officials who were in charge of preparing the Russian team for the Winter Olympics this year.
Chelyabinsk Region
New politicians
Chelyabinsk Region is most likely to meet a new governor. The term of the current governor Pyotr Sumin will come to an end soon. Last week it was announced that he asked not to include him on the list of candidates for the next term. “Young politicians need to have a go”, Pyotr Sumin observed. There are five candidates for the seat at the moment.
Road police
Over 30 officers of road police were involved into illegal business with car insurances. Investigation committee of the regional prosecution disclosed details of this loud case last week. Members of the group falsified documents regarding non-existing car accidents thus getting payments from insurance companies.
Anti-corruption fight
FederalPress Center in Chelyabinsk launched a series of round table discussions devoted to the topic of new targets in fighting corruption. The first talk was held on March 4, 2010 and included Anatoly Bragin, deputy chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the region, and City Duma deputy Aleksey Sevastianov. Both experts agree that the country has developed unified policy of anti-corruption activities. This is a long-term strategy which will allow reducing corruption to some socially tolerable level.
Kurgan Region
Election campaign in Kurgan goes on quite intensively. The city is full of huge billboards with the photographs and Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin to support the local division of the political party United Russia.
Leader of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Vladimir Zhirinovsky also visited Kurgan to meet with the party’s voters last week.
Court decree
Kurgan Regional Court recognized the claim of State Labor Inspection against the administration of the Kurgan’s Bus Plant. Directors of the Plant issued orders to lay-off personnel of the company, but the Inspection found these orders to be illegal. Now the court’s decree fully favors employees.
Expert from Holland
Representative of “PUM – Netherlands Senior Experts” Willem Hendrik Van der Stek visited Shadrinsk, Kurgan Region. He met with small and medium size business owners employed in the spheres of commercial trade and industrial production.
The expert from the Netherlands underlined attractiveness of the Urals’ nature to European tourists. Therefore most promising businesses would be hunting tourism, and sports and health tourism (river rafting, hiking, biking, sight-seeing, etc.).
American Chamber of Commerce in Russia
Delegation from Kurgan Region headed by governor Oleg Bogomolov traveled to Moscow last week and presented the region’s potential for the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia.
Kurgan’s main advantage among other regions with raw-material economy is highly developed machine-building sensitive to technical innovations. The second advantage is the geographical location of the region on the cross-roads of the trunk transport streams of the country.
The presentation was positively received by Andrew Somers, AmCham President. He mentioned that one of the largest American companies, DuPont, expressed interest to cooperate with Kurgan’s producers.
