Heating troubles
The main event in Altai Region last week was serious fire at Barnaul thermoelectric power plant TEC-3. 700 square meters of the plant’s building caught fire and caused malfunction of the central heating system. Three large districts of the region’s capital stayed without heat supply for several days.
New government
Head of Altai Republic Alexander Berdnikov officially became the governor for the next term. He dismissed the old government and fired several officials who worked by contracts. Current ministers will stay in the office and continue doing their jobs until new people are approved by the Republic’s parliament.
News from Novosibirsk
Novosibirsk suburb, a town of scientists Koltsovo, again attracted attention of the regional mass media. Mayor of Koltsovo Nikolai Krasnikov had previously been accused of forgery and power abuse. This list of accusations was completed by the third one last week. This time investigation committee suspects that the mayor issued illegal permission for the construction of an apartment building on federal land avoiding required procedures at government property agencies.

Death a journalist in Tomsk caused huge public scandal in the region. Konstantin Popov was delivered to a sobering-up facility on January 3, 2010 where he was heavily beaten by a senior sergeant, an employee of the station. The journalist died of traumas on January 20. After that several hundreds of people gathered in the center of the city and demanded fair investigation. Viktor Kress, governor of Tomsk Region, also asked to check out professionalism of Tomsk militia.
Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia Rashid Nurgaliev suspended Viktor Grechman, head of militia of Tomsk Region, due to the event.
News from Omsk
The list of candidates for the seat of mayor of Omsk gets larger. Current mayor Viktor Shreider, the official candidate of the United Russia political party, has to compete with his fellow party member Igor Zuga, former employee of the defense ministry Alexander Korotkov (put forward by Yabloko), and Yan Zelenski of Liberal Democratic Party. There are three more candidates, so the mayor’s elections in March promise to be very hot.
