December 8th
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited Perm on the night of December 8th to deliver condolences and hold a meeting with the government representatives. Perm suffered a horrible fire on December 5, 2009. The most popular night club in the city caught fire during an evening show celebrating the club’s 8th Birthday. Guests panicked and did not know how to get out. As a result, over 100 people died due to burns and injuries.
Putin spoke about complete ineffectiveness of the local services and local government. He intends to strengthen control and raise responsibility level of private entrepreneurs. Prime Minister also promised to evaluate effectiveness of the regional government based on fire safety regulations compliance in the region.
President Dmitry Medvedev spoke with the regional governor Oleg Chirkunov by phone and voiced out his expectations. All people responsible for the tragic accident should be identified and brought to justice, the President said.
December 9th
Head of administration of Perm Arkady Katz applied to Perm City Duma with a request to terminate his contract pre-term. He explained his decision by the tragic accident and his own personal shock.
Government of Perm Region resigned. Governor Oleg Chirkunov decided that the new government will be formed after all investigative procedures and internal investigations are over. During this period of time current members of the government were asked to continue work. To provide objective approach to investigation, minister of entrepreneurship and trade, minister of city construction and infrastructure and minister of public security have been dismissed.
December 10th
Legislative Assembly of the region held a meeting that day and listen to a report of the regional governor. He spoke about the measures that were taken by the government. He also mentioned addressing President of Russia after all procedures are over to discuss his resignation.
Investigation commission from the Prosecutor General Office started work in Perm. The commission is headed by Aleksey Pukhov, who had already been involved in serious investigations in the region in 2000 and 2007.
