Police Law
Police Law came into power on March 1, 2011. The President signed seven orders clarifying the structure of the new law enforcement agency. It is planned that militia employees will go through a professional certification procedure and only the best will be employed by police. The number of employees will be considerable reduced by over 170 thousand jobs and make about 1.28 million people.
Minister of Internal Affairs Rashid Nurgaliev will present candidates for the leading police positions by the middle of March.
Alexander Boiko, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Russia Packing Industry Development Subcommittee Chairman, talked to FederalPress about the new law: “I am not a specialist in law enforcement, of course, but from the point of view of a common citizen and victim of robbers (I did face unsatisfactory work of militia personally and through my organization), I don’t believe changing title will produce any core changes. But let’s hope that after certification something will change. This depends on who comprises certification body. They do promise to rise salaries. But taken corruption and bribery level, pay rise must be truly high.”
Mayor of Moscow
Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin was appointed Secretary of the Political Council of Moscow Regional Division of the United Russia Party on March 2, 2011. His candidacy was put forward by the party’s chairman Vladimir Putin, and unanimously approved by the party members.
“I guarantee that there will be no quiet life in the city’s division. Everything we proclaim will be implemented. Plans we make must not be abstract. We should focus on the real needs of Moscow citizens. Party organization of Moscow is the organization for common citizens. Our task now and in long term perspective is improvement of the quality of life in Moscow,” Sergey Sobyanin stated.
Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation held its VI Congress to elect new President. 433 out of 437 members voted for Sergey Katyrin.
Ex-President of the Chamber Evgeny Primakov says “suggesting candidacy of Sergey Nikolaevich Katyrin was unanimous opinion of the governing body and Chambers’ representatives. This candidate received support of President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin”.
Evgeny Primakov also noticed that he would continue work in the Chamber’s project “Mercury Club”, which he initiated.
Tatyana Guseva, President of Ryazan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, thinks the Congress results were quite predictable due to hard work that preceded. “Results of the Congress inspired me a lot. We adopted the Charter for five years, setting up rules for our work to support us, Program of development, and a good disciple of Evgeny Primakov stepped in. Sergey Nikolaevich is a man of broad worldview, and most importantly, positive, quick and mobile, able to listen and help”, Tatyana Guseva commented.
Sochi Winter Olympics Mascots
Russian people selected three mascots for the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014. They are the Polar Bear, the Hare and the Leopard. The Ray of Light and the Snowflake have become mascots for Paralympic Games.
The chosen symbols produced quite a storm of opinions. Creator of the Soviet 1980 Olympic Mascot Victor Chizhikov calls the Polar Bear a rip-off.
Sergey Mironov, Fair Russia leader and chairman of the Council of Federation, is also strongly against the Polar Bear mascot. “Polar Bear is very biased, he is lobbied by the United Russia and this is absolutely not right”, Sergey Mironov declared. Out of the suggested mascots dolphin was Sergey Mironov’s favorite choice for it had genuine connection with the uniqueness of Sochi.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia and deputy chairman of the State Duma, calls the Polar Bear stupid, the Hare – cowardly, the Leopard – a bloodthirsty animal. “These Olympic mascots do not appeal to any positive emotions”, he stated.
Chairman of Sochi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vadim Levchenko would not choose any of the suggested mascots. “Honestly speaking, I don’t really like them. They are not professionally made. And these symbols mean nothing to Sochi.” Investments into the Olympic construction and problems with power supply are the burning issues on Sochi’s agenda today.
Illegal casinos
Moscow Regional Court ruled that arrest of five people suspected in organizing illegal casinos in Moscow Region minor towns was legal. The court also refused to let businessman and chief figure in the case Ivan Nazarov out on bail. Official accusation will be changed from fraud to illegal entrepreneurship.
Mass media speculated on the topic of connectedness of Moscow Region Governor Boris Gromov to this case.
