Nizhny Novgorod City Duma deputies have to postpone important decision for another meeting. Last week Duma gathered no quorum for voting. No quorum
Out of 42 only 22 deputies of Nizhny Novgorod City Duma turned up for the Duma’s session devoted to changes in the City Charter. The Charter might be amended to introduce the new procedure of mayor’s elections changing people’s general election system to closed election by city duma deputies. The session was cancelled due to the little number of deputies.
Governor of the region Valery Shantsev expressed discontent with such irresponsible behavior of the deputies, but then noticed that the agenda of the meeting hadn’t been defined correctly. Alongside with mayor’s election system, the deputies had been suggested to decide upon moving the election day from October 2010 to March 2010 and extending the number of deputies in the City Duma from 42 to 48.
Unity Day
Deputy Chairman of the Russian government Alexander Zhukov, presidential envoy in the Volga Federal District Grigory Rapota and governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev officially opened the new bridge over the river Oka. This is a complex bridge which will be used by both automobiles and subway trains.
Construction of the bridge started in 1992, but then had to stop two times due to financial troubles. Main works were accomplished in the past 2 years. Subway trains section of the bridge will start operating in 2011.
Traffic capacity of the bridge is estimated at 3 thousand automobiles per hour in one direction. However roads leading to the bridge aren’t completely finished yet and the maximum capacity will not be reached just now.
The governor of the region also launched two sports complexes on the national holiday – the Unity Day of Russia on November 4, 2009. Marat Safin, one of the best tennis players in the world, Nikolai Kruglov, biathlon world champion, and PPE Grigory Rapota came to participate. Both sports complexes are quite unique for the region since they can be used for training in various kinds of sports.
