Industrial achievements

Two big enterprises of Novosibirsk Region announced positive operational results last week.

Novosibirsk Airport Tolmachevo reported 20% rise of passenger traffic in January 2010 compared to January 2009. The general prognosis for this year promises overall passenger traffic increase of 5.1%.

The second optimistic report was issued by Novosibirsk Metallurgical Works NMZ-K, part of Metallservice JSC, one of the leading metal traders in Russia. The Works has reached pre-crisis level of production due to new trading markets suggested by its new owner, Metallservice Group. Rolled metal products manufacture increased by three times, which is compared to the level of production in 2008. Production of pipes also extended by 3.8 times.

Reforming militia

Governor of Tomsk Region Viktor Kress put forward a suggestion to introduce the system of elections of district militia officers. The initiative was made before the Regional Duma. This measure can help making militia service more socially responsible.

The governor’s idea was actively supported by Grigory Shamin, Head of the Regional Duma Legal Committee, and Tomsk senator Vladimir Zhidkih. The latter referred to the American system of sheriffs as a possible perspective for the militia service development in Tomsk Region.

Industry in Kuzbass

A company owned by Ralif Safin “MarrTEK” opened its first coal mining enterprise in Kuzbass. It is an open-cut mine Stepanovsky.

Another news-maker in Kuzbass is SDS Holding (Siberian Business Union Holding). SDS purchased its first electric power station and thereby acquired the status of an energy-generating company. SDS also launched production of open cargo wagons, which will be used to transport coal. The production of wagons is organized at Kuzbass Wagon Manufacturing Company (KVSC).

All these news came in quite welcome since Kuzbass celebrates its 165 anniversary this year. 165 years ago a famous Russian traveler and geologist Pyotr Chikhachov introduced the term “Kuzbass” to denote Kuznetsky Coal Basin.

Altai’s history and culture

Government of the Republic of Altai cancelled its Decree of 1997 prohibiting archeological excavations of kurgans in Kosh-Agach district of the Republic. This decision caused more conflicts between the historians and the local dwellers.

Meanwhile, speaker of Altai’s parliament Ivan Belekov wrote a play about Altai’s famous artist, teacher and public activist Grigory Choros-Gurkin. Premier show of the play took place last weekend.

Altai and Turkmenia

Alttrans, Altai Transformer Plant JSC, completed manufacture of the first transformer substation, a project costing 2 million US dollars. The substation is ready to be shipped to Turkmenia.

Other news of the region mostly concerned criminal affairs. Thus, a deputy of Novoaltaisk City Duma Vladimir Bychkov became a subject of criminal investigation, while a Department Chair of Biisk Technological Institute was accused of exceeding powers.
